La acción "Turning a Public Toilet Into a Spa" consistió en la instalación ( sin ningún permiso u autorización oficial ) de una ducha equipada con sistema de hidromasaje en el baño público de la Plaza de George Orwell, en el corazón del barrio gótico de Barcelona.
Ademas de la ducha se disponibilizaba a los posibles usuarios gel de baño y champú ( de fabricación propia) así como toallas que fueron repuestas con regularidad durante los tres días en que la ducha se mantuvo funcional.
La plaza de George Orwell (también conocida como Plaza del Tripi) constituye un caso único dentro de la actual organización urbanística y social en la ciudad de Barcelona.Alli conviven tres grupos diferenciados y antagónicos.
Por un lado, las fuerzas del orden público, que patrullan continuamente la zona y estacionan en la misma sus vehículos antidisturbios, vigilando el cumplimiento de la legislación vigente ( incluida la reciente y contestada ley municipal de civismo)
El segundo grupo, conocido popularmente como los piratas, está formado por, indigentes, traficantes y consumidores que mantienen una presencia constante en la plaza.Son ellos los usuarios habituales del baño público, de reciente construcción y ya readaptado a los usos y necesidades de este grupo humano.
En el se vienen aseando precariamente un gran número de indigentes, ademas de ser un discreto punto de compra-venta y consumo de estupefacientes.
El tercer grupo, más heterogéneo que los dos anteriores, lo integran los vecinos residentes, clientes y trabajadores de los establecimientos hosteleros de la plaza (en la que se encuentran hasta cinco terrazas) y los transeúntes ocasionales.
Este grupo adopta el carácter de público, espectadores más o menos conscientes, más o menos activos, de las evoluciones que vigilantes e infractores desarrollan en una continua y compenetrada coreografía que solo ocasionalmente eclosiona en episodios de violencia o confrontación directa.
No obstante, el ambiente de observación mutua, de rotativa posesión del terreno se hace claramente perceptible en todo momento.
La instalación de la pieza se desarrolló pues de espaldas a las fuerzas del orden, contando con la complicidad de los residentes.
Al incorporar un elemento funcional en el interior de un dispositivo oficial como este baño público supone un ejercicio de desobediencia civil e infiltración.
Esta infiltración, a pesar de partir de una voluntad de ampliar los servicios públicos al ciudadano, ha de ser generada desde la ilegalidad.
De este modo, para conseguir los necesarios suministros de agua y electricidad , me vi en la necesidad de intervenir contundentemente los dispositivos antivandálicos con los que este baño público está equipado.
El sistema de ducha fue extensivamente usado por los habituales de la plaza en los tres días que se mantuvo operativo, antes de ser destruido por un grupo de turistas ebrios, y posteriormente retirado por el equipo de limpieza municipal.

Entre los usuarios del baño, las especulaciones sobre el origen de este inesperado equipamiento todavía se mantienen.


On the 14th of July, the action "turning a public toilet into a spa" was held.
It consisted on the installation (without any permission or official authorization) of one shower equipped with hydro massage bath system in the public toilet located at George Orwell Square, in the heart of the Gothic district of Barcelona.
The installation also made available to the users bath gel and shampoo (of my own manufacture) and towels that were regularly replaced during the three days in which the shower stayed functional.
George Orwell Square (Aka Trip Square) constitutes an unique case on the present urban-planning and social organization in the city of Barcelona.
Three differentiated and antagonistic groups coexist daily on the reduced area of this public space.
On one hand, the forces of the public order, that patrol the zone continuously and park in the square their antiriot vehicles, watching the fulfillment of the law.
The second group, known popularly as The Pirates, is formed by homeless, dealers and consumers who hold a constant presence in the square.
They are the habitual users of the public toilet where the action took place, a recent construction which has soon been readapted by the pirates according to their needs. A great number of indigents precariously clean themselves in such a usually dirty space. It is also a discreet point of illegal transaction and narcotics consumption.
The third group, more heterogeneous than the previous ones, integrates the resident neighbors, clients and workers of the five terraces you can find at the square and the occasional passers-by, both tourist and locals.
This group adopts, more or less consciously, in a more or less active manner, the role of public, spectators of the evolutions that Police and Pirates develop in a continuous and well learned choreography that only occasionally explodes in episodes of violence or direct confrontation. However, the atmosphere of mutual observation and rotating possession of the territory is clearly perceivable at any moment.
The shower structure and mechanism was installed hiding from the police patrols, with the complicity of the residents. Its purpose was to improve the daily life conditions of the Pirates and occasional travelers.
Adding a functional element inside an already existing official device such as this public toilette states an exercise of civil disobedience and infiltration.
This infiltration, in spite of its will to improve the public services given to the citizen, has to be generated from illegality.
So, in order to obtain the necessary water provisions and electricity, It was necessary to take apart the antivandalic devices with which this public toilet is equipped. After doing so, all the original systems were put to work again.
The shower system was extensively used by the habitual ones of the square during the three days that it stayed operative. During the third night, it was destroyed by a group of drunken tourists, and then removed by the municipal cleaning team.

Among the shower users, speculations on the origin of this unexpected equipment are still discussed.
