Ruben Verdu

All the different lines of work that are shown here reflect somehow the various approaches the artist uses in developing his projects. In general, each work grows from the specificity of a cultural episode carrying with it all its anthropological content. Beyond these explicit differences, the work can be understood as following a similar pattern. First, there is a continued interest to treat the ubiquity of the visual regime as a consented submission to a discipline, that one of the eye; and, second, in doing so, the work always conveys a kind of comical collapse of contemporary culture that carries down with it all intents to built its universal transcendence.

Fear fills our mouths with the excess of a mental activity that is mostly triggered by the eye, and, immediately, we are compelled to swallow fast, or be swallowed at last. This, after all, is the unmitigated ubiquity of the discipline of the eye.

The photographic image, as well as the cinematographic, are synchronic, instantaneous, and hence stable, referential. The painted or the manuscripted are, on the other hand, fully diachronic. Their unfolding is trapped in the totality of an iconical status, but, paradoxically, its production can be retaken, its making can be continued. Capturing it, discerning it, ends only at the insistence of continuity.
