Durante años he recolectado documentos de identidad, tarjetas de crédito y pasaportes de distintas nacionalidades, provenientes de asaltos realizados por delincuentes comunes en las calles de Barcelona.

Entre 2000 y 2003, en el casco histórico de esta ciudad los asaltos a turistas se sucedían a un ritmo constante..

Las calles estrechas, laberínticas y poco iluminadas de esta zona de la ciudad, propiciaban la rápida huida de los asaltantes a la vez que ofrecían ciertos puntos donde los delincuentes podían vaciar rápidamente los bolsos robados, llevarse el dinero en efectivo y abandonar el resto.

Llegué a conocer bien estas localizaciones y estableciendo una rutina de recolección, recuperando un elevado número de "pruebas".

Para el proyecto el Passage Subterrain, 25 de estos documentos viajaron hasta Paris camuflados bajo la apariencia de objetos artísticos al uso.
Para ello se enmarcaron como si de obra gráfica se tratase, firmados y numerados por el autor, y fueron enviados por una compañía especializada en transportes de obras de arte, ajustándose a todos los requisitos burocráticos habituales (listas de transporte, seguros, etc)..

De este modo, el sistema artístico se convierte en una pantalla para encubrir el delito, pues la posesión de este material constiuye en si una actvidad criminal, y por lo tanto, punible.
Un delito ejercido contra el Estado, desde el momento en que los documentos no pertenecen a los indivíduos que en ellos figuran, sino a los estados de los que son sudbitos.

Una vez en Paris, los documentos son despojados de su condición "artística", pasando a ser instalados en las paredes del Passage Souterrain, y alli disponibilizados a cualquier transeunte que decida apropiarse de ellos, y de este modo recobrar su origen delictivo.





For the past years, I have been collecting passports, identity documents and credit cards from robberies carried out by burglars in the streets of Barcelona.
Between the years 2000 and 2003, robberies to tourists happened to a constant rhythm in the historic center of the city, where I lived. The narrow, labyrinthine and badly lit streets of this zone created an ideal set for the fast flight of the assailants and offered innumerable points where to quickly empty the content of the stolen bags, get the cash and abandon the remainders.
I came to know well the location of this spots and recovered a wide number of documents.
For his project in the Passage Souterrain, 25 of these documents traveled to Paris camouflaged under the appearance of artistic objects. To accomplish this, they were framed as art-works, signed and numbered by me. They were transported by a company specialized in shipments of works of art, being adjusted to all the usual bureaucratic requirements.
By doing so, the artistic system becomes a screen to conceal the crime, for the possession of this material is a criminal activity by itself, and therefore, a punishable situation. It is a crime, on the other hand, held against "the State", since the documents do not belong to the individuals, but to the states of which they are citizens.
Once in Paris, the documents were despoiled of their "artistic camouflage", installed in the walls of the Passage Souterrain. Becoming available material for anyone who may wish to take them, they recover their criminal origin.
